Hello VA birders,
I was able to get a few hours birding in Northumberland Co. yesterday before
the rain set in. I spent most of the morning at Hughlett Point. Land birds
kept a low profile in the windy conditions. Highlights included a MERLIN, 3
AMERICAN BITTERN, 8 TUNDRA SWAN, and hundreds of COMMON LOON, including a
raft of over 100 birds in Dividing Creek. There were also 100's of scoters
and gulls far offshore.
I also spent a little time at Dameron Marsh. In the fields on Cloverdale
road I saw a single VESPER SPARROW. The wax myrtle bushes around the
observation platform held hundreds of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERs, including a
partially leucistic individual. It's plumage gradually became more white
from the head to the tail end, with the tail being all white.
By the time I got to Vir-Mar Beach the wind and rain were blowing a gale and
only managed 20 minutes of "sea" watching with only LONG-TAILED DUCK added
to the day list.
As a side note both Hughlett and Dameron will be closed Tuesdays through the
end of January (2007) for managed wildfowl hunts.
