Birders,
While scouting for next weekend's birdwalk at Mason
Neck SP (Fairfax Co.) this morning, I had most of the
same waterfowl that Steve Williams saw on Belmont Bay
today. I really enjoyed seeing large numbers of so
many species mixed together. It's always a treat to
see Canvasback and especially Redhead. Other
waterbirds present included 4 HORNED GREBES and a
COMMON LOON.
A few CHIPPING SPARROWS were still around in the
Visitor Center and picnic areas.
Next Saturday's bird walk at Mason Neck State Park
will be led by myself. Instead of 9am, we'll start at
8am, when the park opens. Meet in the parking lot by
the Visitor Center. We'll probably bird the Bayview
Trail after scoping the bay.
Lastly, while in a corn(field) maze with my friend in
The Plains (Fauquier Co.) late this afternoon, we
found a tame blackbird that I initially ID'd as a
Rusty out of typical habitat that hadn't completely
molted into fall plumage. After looking at Sibley and
Nat. Geo. I feel it was a male BREWER'S BLACKBIRD. It
was feeding on corn kernels on the ground. This bird
was scalloped brownish on the head and breast (upper
back, too?, I forget where the demarcation was), the
rest of the bird was dark and glossy. Any input about
this bird is welcome.
