Greetings on a beautiful snowy day!
Yesterday (Monday Jan 20) I went to the Northern
Neck and to King William Co in the Middle
Peninsula to some of my favorite spots.  Most
shallow bodies of water were frozen including
Currioman Bay in Westmoreland Co where I usually
see large numbers of waterfowl.  I was surprised
by the still low number of bay ducks at George
Washington's Birthplace (1800 scaups w/ no
canvasbacks, only a few goldeneye and
red-breasted mergs, less than 100 buffleheads).
But the 600 tundra swans near the picnic area
were fabulous. I spent about an hour just
watching and listening to them.  Two other
highlights were 3 great egrets flying over a
snowy marsh along the Rappahannock in Richmond Co
(Mulberry I) and 3 Bonaparte's gulls in
Tappahannock near the bridge.

In late afternoon I went to look for a Golden
Eagle that had been seen on the Walkerton CBC
(Jan 5) in a private wildlife reserve along the
Pamunkey River in King William Co.  I couldn't
find the golden eagle but did find my first
greater white-fronted goose for this part of the
state.  It was among about 1600 Canada Geese.
This goose flock also should be visible from the
Pocket at the Pamunkey Reservation and from the
road that passes along Old Town Farm where the
geese often congregate.

By the way, the Walkerton CBC was excellent this
year.  I'd be glad to send the Excel spreadsheet
to anyone interested. Or, the totals will soon be
posted on the CBC website. We beat our previous
record of 90 spp (now 100). We had 3 new spp
(snow goose, purple finch, and fish crow thanks
to Kurt Gaskill and Bill Portlock) and about 50
new high-counts for individual spp.  because of
our ever-improving coverage (great crew of
thorough birders, and permission from more
landowners).  This count is less than an hour
from Richmond and Fredericksburg.  Let me know if
you want to help next year on January 4.

Well I'd better get back to writing semester
comments on my students.  Oh joy, what fun!
All the best
Fred
