Had the day off from work for MLK holiday so I drove up to Nokesville and
Fauquier County to see if any of the recent rarities had survived the cold
snap. The pond off Parkgate Dr. (Rt. 653) where the Trumpeter Swan has been
seen was completely frozen and the swan was not located. About 50 Canada Geese
were seen in the field but no sign of the Greater White-front. 12 Rusty and 6
Brewer's Blackbirds were seen at the feeding troughs at the top of the hill on
Fleetwood Dr. (Rt. 611) about .8 miles south of Parkgate. No Brewer's were seen
at the old church of Fleetwood south of Aden Rd.
The pond off Harrison Rd. south of I-66 in Fauquier Co. was also completely
frozen and no waterfowl were present. However, ~850 Canada Geese and 1 Greater
White-fronted Goose were seen on a partially frozen pond reached by following
Harrison Rd. to the T-intersection and turning left on Zulla Rd.(Rt 709) the
pond is on the north side of the road.
On the way up, I saw an imm. light phase Rough-legged Hawk on the west side of
US 29 about 0.3 mile south of the Rapidan River in Greene Co.
Good Birding!
