VA BIRDers,
Higlights today were a few Common Loons (Possum Pt and Belmont Bay), a visit
to the Mason Neck heron rookery (hundreds of nests buildings in-progress!),
Tundra Swan (Belmont Bay), Am. Black Duck (Mason Neck NWR), Hooded Mergansers
(Cedar Run area and Possum Pt), No. Harrier (Julie Metz Wetlands), Sharpie and
Coops in var. places, Broad-wingeds (3, Metz), Wild Turkey (Marine Corps Base
Quantico and Possum Pt), King Rail (Metz), Virginia Rail (Cedar Run area),
Spotted Sandpiper (Possum Pt), Wilson's Snipe (Possum Pt), Pectoral Sandpiper
(Possum Pt area), Am. Woodcocks (MCB Quantico), Boneparte's Gulls (Belmont
Bay),
Royal Terns (Occoquan Bay, Frfx side), Whip-poor-wills (MCB Quantico), E.
Kingbird (Possum Pt), White-eyed Vireos (Possum Pt and Metz), Red-eyed Vireo
(Possum Pt), Gray Catbird (Metz), 12 species of warbler observed incl. Prairie
Warblers (Possum Pt and Mason Neck SP), and Prothonotary and Worm-eating
(Possum
Pt), Vesper Sparrow (Mason Neck NWR), Savannah Sparrows (Mason Neck SP), and
Rusty Blackbird (Possum Pt). Rich Rieger, Kim Peacock, and I - with an
afternoon assist from Lara Bainbridge - finished a relatively easy day of
birding with
100+ species. We topped it off with shrimp on the barbie plus a great
Bordeaux.
