Hello all
After hearing about a Sedge Wren on Bells Lane yesterday, Pat & I went out to
look for it . The only birds there were a few Palm Warbler's , Yellow -- rumped
, Am. Goldfinch's & a few Savannah Sparrow's . On the Ponds were four Pied --
billed Grebe's & four Green-- winged Teal . After that we took off to check out
the other areas & here is what we found .
McCune's
Pied -- billed Grebe -- 3
Dupont Pond
Black --crowned Night Heron -- 1 imm.
Wood Duck -- 4
Quillen's
Pied --billed Grebe -- 4
Great Blue Heron -- 1
Smith's
Great Blue --- 1
Green -- winged Teal -- 4
Am. Golden -- Plover -- 8
Killdeer -- 64
Lesser Yellowlegs -- 1
Wilson Snipe -- 4
The birds of the day came from the Swoope area . First was an American Bittern
at the Boy Scout Camp along with four Wood Duck . The Bittern was in the far
right back corner of the pond that is lined with trees ( near the beaver dam ).
The second bird a Marsh Wren was located on the dirt road (Rt. 705 ) just after
you go over the bridge . It was in a wet field on the right . Other birds were
Lincoln's Sparrow , White Crowned Sparrow & Song Sparrow . Both of these birds
were seen between 12 & 12:30 pm . The last pond to be checked was Smith's .
From my last post a couple of people wanted directions to Smith's . To be up
front with them Smith's is on private land & only a few members in our bird
club have permission to access the property for close up viewing . For years I
would view it from Rt . 705 , the dirt road . To view it from here you would
need a scope or a good pair of binoculars . Here are the directions to Smith's
From I 81 N or S get off at exit 220 follow Rt. 262 to Rt. 252 turn left onto
Rt. 252 go about two miles to Rt. 693 ( Cedar Green Road ) a right turn --
follow about two miles to Rt.703 turn left at Turkey houses . Go to the Hebron
Church on your right & turn Left onto Rt. 708 -- follow the signs for the Boy
Scout Camp -- these roads are all hard surface . When you get to the Y on Rt.
705 a left turn will take you to the Boy Scout Camp & a RIGHT will take to to
view Smith's ( dirt road ) follow the dirt road for about mile & a half to the
top of the hill ( just past the gray barn & white house on your left ) the pond
will be on the right . Good luck to those who venture out this afternoon .
Happy birding to all .
Pat & Allen Larner
