I remember seeing 4 kettles of broad winged hawks over a marsh here in NO VA
back in the 80's and the 4 of us present all came up with different numbers
of what we had seen. But one of us took a series of photos of all 4 kettles
and the "real" count was 10 times! more than the highest estimate.
I sat with those photos for several hours after I got them and tho my count
was the highest of the estimates, the photos really surprised me.
They use mechanical counters at many counts that involved so many birds, and
this helps immensely, but the photo record is even better!

This evening my wife and I counted the Chimney Swifts at Grundy High School.
We have been doing this for the last few evenings and counting those little
bullets is down right difficult. So I came up with an idea, though it may
not be new to some of you. I took my video camera and tripod and video taped
the birds. Then I brought the tape home, played it in slow motion and
counted the birds. It was much easier for me and I believe much more
accurate. Our total for this evening was 2,550 birds. Maybe this idea will
be helpful to some others out there.
