VA Birders,
On a visit to Craney Island earlier this month, I learned that the
entrance gate has been changed (as of Jan. 2003). Karrin Frankie, the
Administrative Support Assistant for Craney Island, said she had sent out a
notice to
birders whose e-mail address she had, and I volunteered to put her message on
VA-Bird for others who might not have received it--so here it is:

Hello!
We started (JAN 03) to use the old gate in front of the office building
DURING BUSINESS HOURS MONDAY - FRIDAY and it is now a secured gate. The
old gate off Hedgerow to the entrance to the compound is now locked at all
times.
The old main gate (a.k.a. The City Gate) will not be locked and will
remain open.
The gate down past the City of Portsmouth Landfill is also locked. For
those who have a key to the NEW BLACK lock, will use this gate ONLY AFTER
HOURS.
The gate we NOW use is located at 4599 Rivershore Road. There is a white
mailbox out by the road that has a RED CASTLE on it also. This entrance
is between a large two story white duplex and a brown shingle house.
There also is a brown sign for Craney Island and a small black anchor out
front.
Pull into the driveway and go towards the left side and there is a
security box on a pole, push the white button and announce yourself.
Someone (usually ME) will open the gate for you.
Come on in and you can double park at building while signing in.
YOU MUST STILL SIGN IN AND OUT DURING THE HOURS OF 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. even
if you have a key. You must also list your vehicle make and license
number and number in your party. If you have more than one vehicle and
want to leave one here, please park down by the old building.
You go out on the island by using the road at the end of the building and
return the same way. After signing out, you just pull up to the gate and
it will automatically open for you.
If you have a key, make sure it is one of the new ones that has a number
on it with the initials H.S. also and looks like a house key. The ones
with the holes in it will NOT work any longer.

COMING FROM NORFOLK USING RT. 164
Take the Cedar Lane first exit and turn left at light at Rivershore Road.
Go about two miles and the entrance is on your right between a large two
story white duplex and a brown shingle house.
COMING FROM NORFOLK OR PORTSMOUTH ON RT. 17 (a.k.a. HIGH STREET)
Turn right on Cedar Lane (Coleman's Nursery) and turn left at light at
Rivershore Road. Go about two miles and the entrance is on your right
between a large two story white duplex and a brown shingle house.
COMING FROM I-664 AND THEN ON RT. 164 TOWARDS NORFOLK
Take the Towne Point Road exit and turn left at the light and once over
the bridge, the road's name will change to Twin Pines Road. STAY on this
road until the end. Turn right on Rivershore Road and go about 3/4 mile
and turn left into the driveway between a brown shingle house and a
large two story white duplex.
COMING NORTH ON RT. 17
Coming on Rt. 17 GOING north, turn left onto Towne Point Road at the
Popular Hills Shopping center. Once over the bridge, the road's name will
change to Twin Pines Road. STAY on this road until the end. Turn right on
Rivershore Road and go about 3/4 mile and turn left into the driveway
between a brown shingle house and a large two story white duplex.
