Is your concern for disturbing bluebirds during breeding  or right now?
Bluebirds sometime use their nest box or some type of cavity for communal
roosting in the winter.  I once saw an unbelievable photograph of more than
a dozen bluebirds, all cuddled together  in a tight circle (tails to
center, heads facing outward) in a nest box on during a very cold winter.
The photo was looking down on them from above.  It was published in some
art photography book by an artist who shows on Eastern Shore, but can't
remember the name.  Ever since then I leave boxes in place.   If you move
your box now, and before it gets very cold, and not very far away, maybe
they'll resume using the same box.  Make sure it has a predator guard
(stove pipe wrapped around the post) for the spring breeding season.

Hope it works for you!

We just moved into our new house in Mollusk,VA off the chesapeake bay, in
our back yard is an old dead tree that has a bluebird box in it. We will
need to remove this tree since it is so near the house but i need to know
when would be the best time to move the nesting box. We do have a family of
bluebirds in it and i dont want to disturb them. Please send me any and all
suggestions. Thanks.
