Some of you have been asking about our owl banding project ... some of you
have been out to check personally. This is our sixth year of banding
Northern Saw-whet Owls at Highland Camp west of Bergton, VA. We opened on
30 October but the numbers banded have been low and the peak of the
migration is late. We have banded 71 saw-whets at this point and have
retrapped 13 birds that were banded at other stations! Even for saw-whet
banding that later figure seems high. We have also retrapped two birds
that we banded in previous years, specifically 2004 and 2005. However,
the total numbers banded for this year are about half of what we banded in
2004 and 2005. Since the migration seems to be peaking late, we will
probably keep banding for at least another week.
