Cliff's photo matches pretty well with some early spring male RE Vireos i
have seen in Gloucester's Beaverdam Park - 3 that i can recall, though two
may have been dups. They seem normal except for the face, and sing right
along with the others. I always thought maybe they were 1 yr. old males
molting into breeding plumage.
I think I'll go along with Dave's identification as he also saw his
variants present with other Red-eyed Vireos. My bird was interacting with
another REV.
The responses I got, many privately, were of varying opinions, but the
most prevalent were that the bird was a Red-eyed Vireo. The next most
popular suggestion was that the bird was a Tufted Titmouse with its crest
down. To me, the position of the eye in the head and the bill shape were
countermanding arguments to that ID. Some people suggested a White-
breasted Nuthatch, but, there, the bill clearly is off. Wilson's Warbler
and Warbling Vireo were also put forth as candidates.
I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond, both to the list
and to me directly, on this matter. I'm certain that I am not the only
one who learned from this exercise in identification. It's hard enough,
at times, when we encounter birds with 'standard' non-standard plumage
without having to worry about ones that have 'non-standard' non-standard
plumage. :)
