I visited Huntley Meadows Park today (4/23) between 1:15 and 3:30 PM.
The best bird of the afternoon was a Female Mourning Warbler seen
"hopping" along the ground in the moist woods along the right side
of the Heron Trail just before the beginning of the boardwalk. Also
present in the moist woods here was a Northern Waterthrush.
At the begining of the boardwalk, I heard and then saw a Sedge Wren.
The wren was first heard on the left side of the boardwalk then seen
as it flew across to the right side. Two Sora were seen on the left
side of the boardwalk at the intersection with the loop. I heard but
did not see a VA Rail in this same area and an American Bittern was
seen flying towards the observation tower. Other birds of note
included: Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary,Spotted and Pectoral
Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe, Kentucky Warbler and Philadelphia Vireo.
I also had a brief glimpse of what appeared to be an adult MS Kite
before it dipped behind the trees at the very back of the marsh near
the observation tower.
Good Birding,
