I stopped by Wakefield Park this Mourning, June 18, 2004, at 9:15 am, to
look for the Mourning Warbler as reported here on the VA-bird listserve. I
was not disappointed! The directions were excellent: Wakefield park is just
west of the beltway off Braddock Road. Enter the park and head north to the
tennis courts and follow the path back into the power line cutback. Go
around the sub-station and look for the male Mourning Warbler in a bush on
the right. When I arrived I heard him singing. After about 15 minutes he
popped up to the top of the bush giving great looks. He then flew across the
path to the Autumn Olive tree and was not seen again.
The gentleman who initially discovered the Mourning Warbler, Mike Collins,
was there. He asks that anyone going to look for the bird be respectful and
to stay on the path. Please dont go into the brush looking for the bird,
just listen and watch. This is a great place for birds. Mike has seen a lot
of great warblers and other birds in this park, and I hope to get back there
soon. I was momentarily excited to see a female warbler with insects in her
beak, thinking this could be the female Mourning Warbler, however, she
turned out to be a female Common Yellowthroat.
