There was a Mourning Warbler at Sunrise Valley Park this morning, from about
6:15 to at least 7:30 when I left. It ran me around in circles while I was
trying to get a good look at it. It moved from the brushy area in front of the
building on the right (across the bridge, bear right on the path, just past the
small wooded area), to the wooded area in front of the larger parking garage
and smaller drainage ditch, and finally forced me to give up looking for it
when it went to wooded area to the right of the larger parking garage.
I did manage to get a few partial looks at it and one decent, though brief,
"whole" look at it, but it was extremely uncooperative. Fortunately, it sang
quite often and called a couple of times. The song was loud (I heard it from
the boardwalk) and most of the time had a "sweet-sweet-burr-burr" pattern
(listening for this song may be the best way to relocate him). He did sing
several variations of that song throughout the morning.
Other birds there included Magnolia Warbler, American Redstart, Waterthrush
sp., Common Yellowthroat and a first-year male Orchard Oriole. I didn't hear
any Blackpolls.
