Hi All,
I managed to sneak out for a few hours this morning to check Thompson WMA.
Starting at upper Thompson along the Trillium Trail I found most of the
regular breeders in spite of the rain and fog. Of interest were a pair of
Yellow-throated Vireos which I haven't seen before at this location and a
Ruffed Grouse which was flushed about a half mile down the trail. Warbler
tallies were 7 Cerulean, 2 Kentucky, 4 Hooded, 25 Redstart, 1 Black-throated
Green, 8 Ovenbird, and 10 Blackpoll. Not too bad for mid-morning. A ton of
Indigo Bunting, Red-eyed Vireo, Scarlet Tanager, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Wood
Thrush, Acadian Flycatcher, Eastern Pewee, and Towhee pretty much rounded
out the list. A Common Raven was seen driving out along Freezeland Road
(perhaps in Warren county).
The Mourning Warbler was singing and allowing quick, but totally decent
views along Ted Lake Trail at lower Thompson. The bird was seen only a
short distance from the parking lot. Habitat seems quite good for migrant
Mournings here ( plenty of thick, low vegetation and honeysuckle tangles).
Always a crowd pleaser... Also here were Blue-winged Warbler, Chat, Common
Yellowthroat, Yellow Warbler; all the typical lower Thompson birds.
The Common Loon is holding strong on Thompson Lake.
Right on,
Alex
