VA-Birders,
I have a little more time to post about the CONNECTICUT WARBLERS and other
good birds at Potomac Overlook Regional Park from this morning.
I arrived later than I had hoped, and only caught the tail end of the night
flight, but noticed that it must have been decent, as several Swainson's
Thrushes dropped out of the sky as well as a Wood Thrush and GRAY-CHEEKED
THRUSH. There were many many birds flying around just before it got light
enough to see, and it was tough at times picking out which chip note belonged
to which bird. I may have heard a Pine Siskin, but the sound I heard was not
very audible so I am not sure.
WINTER WRENS are back, as well as the a couple YELLOW-RUNPED WARBLERS, two
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, single DARK-EYED JUNCO and few WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
I ended up at the now meadowy Indian Circle Garden (so the sign says) well
after sunrise, and noticed several BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS and other
warblers around. I was considering leaving when I saw a largish warbler poking
around the tangles of some vines. I got a great view of an adult CT WARBLER,
which flew back into the vegetation soon after being noticed. I was happy to
get the bird for the 'ole year list, but not satisfied with my view. After
about 10 more minutes of searching, I noticed another bird flitting about the
top of some stemmy plant with seedheads, that are actually all over the place
here. I was amazed to find a second CT WARBLER, this time a first year bird!!
I actually watched this bird for 15 minutes at times from a distance of just
5-6 feet. It was still bouncing around the seedheads when I pulled myself away
with the office beckoning. My first multiple-CT Warbler day! The morning's
list is below.
