I played hooky from work this morning to visit Monticello Park, well
it actually turned into this morning and part of this afternoon, but
no one will tell on me will they? 9:48am to 2:30pm
What a great time I had. I ran into a gaggle of friendly birders, some
that I have met before and some that I have not, and oh yeah, the
birds, they were around too.
Highlights were: OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, MOURNING WARBLER (best look
that I have ever gotten, <10 feet away perched in the relative open),
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, and several
stunning male BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERs.
Another birder and I found the Olive-sided Flycatcher down at the end
of the trail where it makes a U-turn. The bird was up high on a dead
limb. I heard the bird sing its quick-three-beers song before I saw
it. Several other birders got good looks and it was still being seen
intermittently when I left at 2:30pm.
There seem to be at least 2 Mourning Warblers. They are singing
intermittently and giving some good looks to those with patience and
luck. There are also a stunning number of Canada Warblers at the park.
Other birders reported a Black-billed Cuckoo but I never saw one I did
however see several Yellow-billed Cuckoos.
