Highlight of the day was an adult Snow Goose with
20 Canada Geese in Walkerton, King and Queen
County.
Spent most of the afternoon in King William
County visiting two sod farms, a couple locations
along the Pamunkey River, and assorted
ponds/marshes, fields and farms along the roads.
Both the tide and the river volume were high so
there was no exposed shoreline or mud along the
river.
In King William Co. I found the following:
56 Killdeer
1 snipe
3 lesser yellowlegs
1 greater yellowlegs
2 spotted sandpiper
2 common loon flying over
4 pied-billed grebe
1 double-crested cormorant
2 great egret
4 great blue heron
15 Forster's tern
630 canada goose
44 pintail
16 gadwall
2 american wigeon
2 wood duck
20 black duck
26 mallard
3 bald eagle
3 harrier
7 kestrel
no buteos or accipiters!
2 barred owl (calling)
black and turkey vultures
2600 red-winged blackbird flying by one spot in
1/2 hour
12 bluebirds (low!)
1 indigo bunting
most common sparrow was chipping (probably 30 or
so)
other sparrows were field, song, swamp, and
white-throat, less than 5 of each
12 cedar waxwings in one flock flying over
house finch and goldfinch
yellow-rumped warblers
In Essex County I stopped in Hustle and at the
Rappahannock River Bridge in Tappahannock.
Warblers in Hustle were yellowthroat,
black-and-white, yellow-rumped and parula. Lots
of chipping sparrows and ruby-crowned kinglet
here too.
Birds at bridge were 10 Forster's tern, 21
ring-billed gull, 2 laughing gull, 3 herring
gull, 1 great black-backed gull and 16 dc
cormorant.
