Preliminary Summary of Mason Neck in June II
Continuing a long-running project to learn about avian diversity and relative
abundance in Northern Virginia, ten teams with an aggregate of 41 hours of
field observation marked the second census of Mason Neck NWR and SP on June 12,
2004.  We found 84 species vs. last year's 82 species in 45 hours.  It is
likely that at least 25% of the land area as well as adjoining riparian, river
and
bay edge, and marshes were censused, making this a comprehensive survey and
probably surpassing the extent of last year's first census of this SE Fairfax
County forested area.  We also had an effort to survey the species found in the
adjacent Hallowing Point Estates which resulted in two additional species to
the overall list.

Highlights of this census were many:  4 Lesser Scaup (3 males) noted on
Belmont Bay, Red-tailed Hawks flying over the central forest made the tally
sheet
for the first time, three King Rails and one Virginia Rail were found in the
Great Marsh, Willow and Alder Flycatcher were reported at the end of the Kane's
Creek Trail, Bank Swallows near the rookery, 5 American Redstarts were noted -
all along the western portion of the peninsula, a Kentucky Warbler on the
Wood Marsh Trail, and a Summer Tanager near the rookery.

In terms of numbers found for various species, the biggest news of the census
was the great numbers of Yellow-billed Cuckoos - 78 were tallied (the 15th
most abundant on the peninsula).  I can tell you that one team noted 15 of
these
birds alone in the first 3 hours!  For comparison, last year's census
produced a sum total of 11 YB Cuckoos. And note that few if any cicadas were on
the
peninsula this year.

Here are the top 15 species and the total numbers reported (except for Canada
Goose, all teams reported these species):

Great Blue Heron 583
Red-winged Blackbird 291
Red-eyed Vireo 159
Common Grackle 151
Acadian Flycatcher 148
Canada Goose 144 (most were on Belmont Bay)
Tufted Titmouse 138
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 113
Red-bellied WP 92
Eastern Wood-Pewee 90
Wood Thrush 89
Northern Parula 87
No. Cardinal 84
American Goldfinch 79
Yellow-billed Cuckoo 78

Except for Canada Goose, Tufted Titmouse, Red-bellied WP and No. Cardinal,
all of these species are migratory - some will go as far as Central and South
America!  I think this observation really brings home the value of places like
Mason Neck!

Although not our primary objective, the census produced an amazing 22
breeding confirmations including such species as Great Egret, Black Vulture, YB
Cuckoo, Belted Kingfisher, Pine Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Ovenbird, and
Louisiana Waterthrush.

Comparing this census with last year's resulted in a few interesting items:
we tallied 10% more birds this year; 5 Red-shouldered Hawks vs. last year's 2;
added both Ring-billed and Great Black-backed Gulls this year vs. last year's
single Laughing Gull; missed Great Horned Owl this year (these raptors don't
call much in June); Chimney Swift is down by a factor of 2; Red-bellied WP is
up a factor of 2; E. Wood-Pewee is up by a factor of 2; Acadian Flycatcher,
Great Crested Flycatcher, and Red-eyed Vireo are nearly the same as last year;
American Crow is down by a third; Fish Crow is down by nearly a factor of 4; we
missed Purple Martins; Wood Thrush is up about 50%;  mimids as a group were
down about a factor of 2; a single E. Starling was tallied; Northern Parula is
down about 25%; Prothonotary Warbler is up by nearly a factor of 2; missed
Worm-eating Warbler this year (probably very few on the peninsula); Ovenbird up
about 20%; Scarlet Tanager up by about a third; Common Grackle down by about
40%; and Baltimore Oriole is down by about a factor of 3.  Also, no House
Sparrow was noted in the NWR or SP.

I am pleased to acknowledge the outstanding participation of the following
people in this census.  Lara Bainbridge, David Buckley, Connie Campanella,
