Birders,
This time of year is always so interesting with the winter birds moving
through at the same time that summer birds are coming in. BLUEBIRDS, TREE
SWALLOWS, and PHOEBES have been observed nesting, the latter rebuilding a
nest in their usual spot on the Visitor Center. I also saw SCAUP,
BUFFLEHEAD, and COMMON MERGANSERS on Belmont Bay this morning. We think
there are young hatched in the nearby BALD EAGLE nest, as an adult was
observed carrying fish toward the nest recently. WOOD DUCKS have been
observed in gorgeous breeding plumage this week as well.
Things are changing on the human front here at the park too. I've accepted
a new job here that will take me away from leading bird walks and other
nature programs. I'll still be leading them for now but we are recruiting
for my replacement. I thought I'd mention that to a) give you all a
heads-up, and b) to let you know that we have summer job opportunities for
naturalists! If you'd like more information about the positions available,
please contact me or our chief ranger, Tim Smith, both at the emails listed
below.
I'll certainly let you all know when or if the bird walk schedule changes.
For now, it's still every Saturday morning from 9 to 11am. We'll meet at
the Visitor Center and go from there to the Bay View Trail. Come watch the
changing of the guard with us!
Good birding,
Jodi Bucknam
