Birders,
The woods were pretty quiet this morning, but the twice-monthly bird walk
still had some good sightings. Most interesting was the female BLUE
GROSBEAK, as well as three male RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS engaging in
aerial acrobatics as they competed for the Visitor Center feeder. The first
sandpiper of the season also made an appearance. although it flew off before
an ID could be determined. Full list follows.
The guided bird walk is held on Mason Neck State Park on the first and third
Saturdays during the summer; stay tuned for an autumn schedule. All are
welcome and no advance reservations are required. We meet at the Visitor
Center for a 9am start, and then hike the one-mile Bay View Trail through a
tidal marsh and deciduous forest. We conclude in the picnic area around
11am. Please address any questions to me at the address below. The next
bird walk will be on Saturday, August 19th.
