Birders,
Boy, am I late posting last week's bird walk tally! Whoops. Anyway...
Eight birders joined me at the park last Saturday morning for the weekly
bird walk. The birders were from a wider geographic range than I usually
see: Jean and Steve were displaced from New Orleans, while Joe, Ute, and
their children (Christopher, Nick, and Ben) drove all the way out from
Winchester, VA. Jake, I didn't catch your location of origin. It was great
to have a wide dispersal of ages as well-- I always like to encourage
budding birders.
We had a decent range of species on our walk, starting at the Visitor Center
and heading over to the picnic area and Bay View Trail. We spent quite a
while at the picnic area, watching waterfowl on the bay. We also lingered
in the marsh along Bay View. Highlights of the morning included
RED-BREASTED and COMMON MERGANSERS; GREATER YELLOWLEGS; WOOD DUCK flyovers;
BALD EAGLE and OSPREY. Full species list follows.
Great Blue Heron
Canada Goose
Wood Duck
Lesser Scaup
Bufflehead
Red-breasted Merganser
Common Merganser
Osprey
Bald Eagle
Greater Yellowlegs
Mourning Dove
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Blue Jay
Crow sp.
Carolina Chickadee
White-breasted Nuthatch
American Robin
European Starling
Northern Cardinal
Song Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Dark-eyed Juco
Common Grackle
Brown-headed Cowbird
Purple Finch (at the V.C. feeder; presumably the same male, female, female
trio seen there over the last several days)
American Goldfinch
The bird walks will continue to be on Saturday mornings from 9 to 11am
during the month of April. We meet at the Visitor Center and then hike the
one-mile Bay View Trail. If time allows (it rarely does) we may also check
out Wilson Spring Trail. Please note the $4/car parking fee; otherwise the
program is free.
Please direct any questions to me at the email or phone number listed below.
Good birding,
