VA BIRDers,
I visited Mason Neck again today but instead concentrated on river/bay edge
habitat instead of (mainly) upland forest as reported here previously. The
resulting different mix was interesting, esp. the obvious reliance of Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers on the black top High Point Rd vs the near total lack on the
narrrow, gravel forest roads. I also came across a few nice groups, albeit
small, of migrants. It appears the western edge of the peninsula is favored
for migrants althought marsh riparian edges in the forest were productive.
Here is the species totals and highlights after nearly 5.5 hrs; virtually no
overlap with previous habitat census.
