VA-Birders,
I used the excuse of needing to get a Golden Eagle Parks pass to visit Manassas
Battlefield this afternoon. I took my wife and young son along, so a lot of
the birding was confined to the car. We did get out and walk the trails a
little at the Deep Cut and NY Monuments.
Starting at the Visitor's Center, I immediately noted 3 singing PINE WARBLERS,
as well as a singing RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET in the tangles and my first VA
CHIPPING SPARROW of the season in the parking lot. This or another one later
sang from the trees across the field.
Chinn Ridge yielded one of 3 EASTERN PHOEBES for the park today as it flew in
front of the car and perched on a roadside snag.
The Deep Cut had a few more PINE WARBLERS, Eastern TOWHEE, and a singing WINTER
WREN, all near the pond by the parking lot. A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER mewed
from the trees.
We went to NY Monuments to try to locate a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and found
none there until we were about to leave. I imitated the nyank nyank call with
my voice, and after a few minutes a pair of them, male and female, flew into
one of the pines and started responding. We watched them for 15 minutes. Here
another Phoebe called from the woods. Getting into the car a BROWN CREEPER
called form a nearby tree, but we never located it. List is below.
