Members of the Montgomery County Chapter the Maryland Orinthological Society,
Mike Bowen, Sandy Hazel, Tom Marko, and Ron Staley visited Northern Virginia to
enjoy the migration at Leesylvania State Park, Julie Metz Wetlands and a short
visit to the Nike site in Lorton. Ron Staley began at 6:00 am with a short
visit to Cockpit Point Rd. birding primarily near the large retention pond near
Cockpit Point and Possum Point Roads. The group met at 7:00 am and birded at
Julie Metz Wetlands followed by most of the morning at Leesylvania State Park.
We birded the Brushy Point Trail, part of the Powell's Creek Trail, the river
off the parking lots as well as the beach area at Free Stone Point. The group
made a brief sojourn onto the pier, crossing the state line into Maryland to
"legitimize" this Maryland Ornithological Society trip. We tried for and
missed the Red-headed Woodpecker at the Beaver Pond. Highlights were great
looks at Worm-eating Warbler, Summer Tanager, Orchard Orioles, Yellow-throated
Warbler and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher on the nest. We saw one Grasshopper
Sparrow and one Bobolink ath ethe Nike site fields in Lorton. Total species 78
