The Back Bay Birding Club had a field trip to the above mentioned places
today. We were surprised to see not one but three lingering Osprey at the
Lynnhaven Inlet. We were able to observe them hunting, catching and eating fish
from
the inlet.Very few ducks were present on the ponds (Bufflehead, Northern
Shovlers & Hooded Mergansers). We also enjoyed 2 female Northern Harriers, a
pair of
Red-tailed Hawks and an American Kestrel. On the wooded side of the trails we
saw about 6 Bluebirds, a couple of Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Pine and
Yellow-rumped Warblers. We made a stop on Newbern Rd and saw the ever-present
Black-crowned Night Herons (always a treat). A quick stop at Fort Story
produced a raft
of about 24 Surf Scoters fairly close to the shore across from the
Lighthouses.
Finally we stopped at 12th Street on the oceanfront to see how many of the
Black Skimmers remained that I reported close to 200 a weeks ago. We were able
to see about a dozen. They (the skimmers) have been pretty consistent for the
past three weeks while slowly dwindling in numbers.
We had a nice day and were able to identify 41 species of birds during the
day.
