Spent the morning Friday in and around Warsaw and Tappahannock.  First, the
birds down there are shy.  This might have to do with the number of shotgun
shells I saw in the Wildlife Refugee.  Second, wish I had had some company,
there's a lot to see and it moves fast.  Here's the skinny:

Wilna Unit of the Rappahannock River Valley NWR was underwater.  Gate locked
and a long muddy hike to the birds who were as cold and miserable as I.  The
best was 14 Great Blue Heron Nesting in a single set of trees opposite the
new outdoor classroom they are building.  They look like old gray-and-lace
grandmothers sitting on the tenement fire escapes.  Total GBHs were 21

Also present:
Osprey - 2
Bold Eagle - 1
Yellow-Rump Warbler - 7 on the togs against the levee
White Throated Sparrow - 14
American Crow - 9
Red Bellied Woodpecker - 2
Flickers - 2

After two hours in the cold at Wilna, I sunk to the level birding from the
car with the following results:

Along Waterview Rd (# 652, between Taylor & Wilna Units)
Canada Geese - 150
Ring Billed Gulls - 500+
Common Snipe - 12
Killdeer - 1
Tundra Swan - 29 (75 yards out in field on right about a mile off of Road
640)
American Kestrel - 1
Bold Eagle - 1 Great fun watching him scare the geese and gulls into the
air.  Swans could have cared less.
Brewers Blackbirds - 2
Redwing Blackbirds - 4
Toward the end of Waterview some one had feeders that were covered with
crows, grackles, and blackbirds - passed too quickly to get details.

On the road back to Naylor's Beach:
American Kestrel - 1
Canvass Back - 1
Common Merganser (f) - 1

Finally I played in Tappahannock while waiting for my daughter's class to
finish up
4 bluebirds: On Gywnnfield Road (#703) north of town:
Approx 60 Double Crested Cormorants on the old pier at the end of Prince
Street
2 pairs of Red-Breasted Mergansers in the water next to the pier
A dozen or so Killdeer South of Rt. 17 a mile or so north of town
