This was a real surprise. A COMMON LOON in a pond in the Westfields
industrial park in Chantilly today, Friday, at 5:00 PM.
The pond is located behind the Scitor building at the SW corner of Lee
Road and Willard Road. Willard crosses Route 28 about 1/2 mile south of
Route 50. From Route 28, go West on Willard and turn left at the first
light (Lee). Turn right into the first parking lot (Scitor). The pond
is behind the 4-story Scitor building immediately in front of you.
Public access to view the pond is on the North side.
I got a long look at this bird at close range - very definite ID. It
had mostly summer plumage: charcoal head and bill, white collar,
mottling on the back.
