The Potomac River at Riverbend Park was 90 to 95% iced over, but there were
a few areas of open water which had concentrations of waterfowl. In one
of the open water areas along the Virginia bank near the Wendt Road picnic
area, I found 3 Long-tailed Ducks. This is my first sighting of this species
in this stretch of the river in at least 15 years at which time I had
found a sole Long-tail below the falls at Great Falls NP.
