A bird talley looking out the window just now: 7 bob white quail, 33
mourning doves,1 red shouldered hawk on the suet feeder, 19 robins, 23
goldfinches, 24 house finches, 4 titmouse, 2 downy woodpeckers, pileated
woodpecker, 5 blue jays, 3 field sparrows, 18 white throated sparrows, 9 song
sparrows, about 16 juncos, 1 red bellied wookpecker, 9 cardinals, 3
chickadees(I'd swear one of them is black capped-(size shape of bib, wing
color, I'm inside and can't hear song if there is any), 1 carolina wren,(Had
a winter wren and eastern phoebe yesterday). The count numbers are up some
but so are the snow flurries at the moment. Yesterday close to dusk I heard
an odd song that I thought might be the neighbor boy blowing a note through
his thumbs with his hands clasped-remember how to whistle like that? But, it
was moving around the woods on the side of the house faster than he could be
moving. My wife(State regional forester) pulled in the drive just then and
had Stokes bird call cassettes handy. She tuned one to long eared owl and we
ended out calling 2 of them within 15 feet-to the edge of the woods. We had a
pretty fair look for about 7-8 minutes although it was getting dark rapidly.
They were sitting in the massive exposed roots of a tree under an embankment.
Nice to see them around.
