All,
As Andy Rabin posted, I found the Loggerhead Shrike in Loudoun County
along Montressor Road today about 10:30. Andy and Phil Kenny had been
there earlier looking for it (as had I) and none of us had found it. I
decided to give it one more try before I left and saw it sitting in a
distant tree in the left hedgerow. It was facing me and puffed up and
looked like a typical fat mockingbird so I passed it off as that at
first but then it turned it's head and I caught a hint of a mask. I
watched it sitting there for at least 15 minutes trying to decide if it
really was the shrike, when finally it hopped up a branch and turned
sideways. Then I could see the dark wings, etc. Eventually it started
hunting along that hedgerow and that's what it was doing when I left. I
guess the bird was still roosting when we were looking for it earlier so
early morning doesn't seem a good time to find it.
