A calling Black-billed Cuckoo did what the alarm clock could not -- get me
out of bed. The cuckoo was a new yard bird for us here in Waynesboro. Upon
checking the bushes and trees in the yard I heard several Blackpolls,
Red-eyed Vireos, one Nashville Warbler and saw one Magnolia Warbler. The
best bird of the early morning, however, was a Lincoln's Sparrow in the
blueberry bush. This is only my 4th spring record of Lincoln's Sparrow in
Virginia, three of which are from my yard (April 24-27, 2001, May 2, 2002
and now May 11,2003). Can't help but believe this is the same individual.
We then left for Bath and Highland county en route to Ft. Lewis Lodge for a
weekend field trip with the Rockingham Bird Club, the avian details of which
will be posted separately. Upon returning Sunday (May 13) we had another
first of the year, a Canada Warbler in the yard. /John
