I went to Leesylvania SP early this morning for 2 hours of birding (6:15 to
8:15) before my wife got up. In that time I found 24 species of warbler, most
along the Powell's Creek trail. The caterpillar infestation I mentioned last
week is still attracting very large numbers of birds. The sound was
incredible. It was difficult to pick out individual songs over the cries of
the waxwings. Warblers along the trail included cerulean, Tennessee, Cape May,
blackburnian, yellow-rumped, yellow, blackpoll, black-throated blue,
black-throated green, Nashville, American redstart, worm-eating, ovenbird,
northern waterthrush, and Louisiana waterthrush. Also along the trail were
barred owl, veery, Swainson's thrush, wood thrush, acadian flycatcher,
great-crested flycatcher, pewee, eatern kingbird, rose-breasted grosbeak,
summer tanager, scarlet tanager, red-eyed vireo, blue jay, indigo bunitng, and
white-breasted nuthatch. Many of these were concentrated around the
infestation. Elsewhere in the park, warblers were calling all along the
entrance road, including (besides many of the ones already mentioned) magnolia,
black and white, yellow-throated, prairie, parula and yellowthroat. A Kentucky
warbler was singing from behind the visitor's center, as was a Canada. A
Wilson's warbler was singing on the side of the hill below the ruins.
