Dave Ledwith, Bill Hohenstein and I had a fantastic morning owling Sunday at
Leesylvania State Park as part of the Ft. Belvoir CBC. Starting at about
5:45am at Metz Wetlands (where we started with a barred owl), we tallied 11
screech, 2 barred, 2 great horned, and 1 saw-whet along the main road in
Leesylvania. Conditions were perfect, with no wind or rain and dark skies. I
have had up to 7 screech owls in previous CBCs, but Sunday took the cake. This
is also the first time I have succeeded in locating a saw-whet in Virginia.
