VA BIRDers,
Weather conditions last night seemed conducive for the first big push of the
fall and so I headed to Leeslyvania at dawn this morning. As the sun rose,
so did the fog along the river and migrants were few along the river near the
last parking lot. A few birds were also seen along the road. It seemed as
if since the sun was not out the birds just stayed inside the forest.
Finally, the sun came out and I came across a nice pocket of birds near where
the road goes under the trestle by the small wetland - most of the migrants
were along the road edge (west side) which made for good viewing. A late
visit to the beaver pond and nearby ravine yielded up a few more birds
rounding out the day. Not too many birds (dominant neotrops were Chimney
Swift, E. Wood Pewee, Red-eyed Vireo, No. Rough-winged Sw, and No. Parula)
but the diversity seemed a bit above average. No real stand out species but
lots of good looks from short distances at nearly all species. The
statistics follow.
