Ben Jesup and I made a quick pass through Leeslyvania State Park this morning
and in spite of the south winds and heat, had a pretty good day. Time was
limited and the birds were plentiful, so we never ventured more than about
200 yards from the car!
Magnolias were the dominant bird today.
Here's the highlights:
Common Yellowthroat 8
N. Parula 4
Magnolia 25
Redstart 5 (2 ad. Male)
Black and White 1
Tennessee 2 (possibly 3)
Cape May 1
Black Throated Blue 1F
Blackpoll 1
White Eyed Vireo 3 (all juv)
Red Eyed Vireo 5
Solitary Vireo 1 *
Yellow Billed Cuckoo 1
Caspian Tern 10
Forester's Tern 1
Rough Winged Swallows ~200
Swifts 10
* We weren't 100% sure on this one. We only had a brief glimpse, but to me,
it looked like the spectacles were boldly contrasting with color on the face
and head (looking more like a Solitary and less like a Juv White eyed). The
spectacles looked bright white and big and again, boldly contrasting with the
other parts of the bird.
