I'm visiting a friend in Hampton Roads for the weekend, and during a brief stop
at Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News yesterday evening, I noted 10 to 20+
least terns flying over the mall, noisily calling and carrying small fish, as
if feeding young. Apparently, there is a nesting colony on the roof of the
mall. We didn't drive around the entire mall, but there was a lot of activity
near the western of the mall, near the Hecht's and Old Navy stores.
Do any local birders out there know anything about this colony? Any idea how
many terns may be nesting on the roof and how many years the colony has been
active?
