Ben Jesup and I were poking around the Meadowood area and a few other spots on
the Mason Neck peninsula yesterday (4-24-04) and we heard something that
sounded like a Least Flycatcher.
We heard a CHE-BECK! coming from a wooded area along a little stream, and then
30 seconds later we heard it again. It called a couple more times in the next
few minutes but we never found the bird.
It sounded just right for a Least but it seems a little early for those guys,
and I don't recall seeing any reports for this species farther south. The MD
Yellow Book has an early date of 4-19, so it's not out of the realm of
possibility.
We couldn't come up with any other possibility other than a Least. It was
definitely NOT and Acadian.
I'm going to call it a Least for my records, but if anyone has any thoughts or
info on why you agree or disagree, I'd love to hear them.
