VA-Birders,
A brief stop at Lawrence Lewis Park off Route 5 in Charles City County this
morning (8:00-9:00 am) on our way to NC yielded some nice birds!
A pair of BLUE GROSBEAKS were right by the road after we turned on to the
entrance road. We heard an EASTERN WOOD PEWEE, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER and
several BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS as we drove down to the end of the road to the
parking lot by the James River.
The BALD EAGLE's nest spotted a month ago now has two good-sized chicks. We
were able to observe the nest while standing on the road near the bridge. One
of the adult Eagle's was perched close to the nest.
We heard and had great looks at 6 warbler species. All were seen from the
bridge:
Yellow
Northern Parula
Yellow-rumped
Blackpoll
Prothonotary
Common Yellowthroat
Other birds on or near the bridge: ORCHARD ORIOLE, a pair of SCARLET TANAGER, a
pair of EASTERN PHOEBE, WHITE-EYED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, and numerous BARN
SWALLOW.
We love this little park for the concentration of great birds in such a small
area!
