Hello all,
Sorry this is so late, but some of the birds I found last Wednesday (5 June)
at Lorton in Fairfax County were notable and may be of general interest.
I was participating in part of the Northern Virginia Breeding Bird Survey
which allowed me access to portions of the former Lorton Penitentiary
property that are normally off limits. Notable birds included grasshopper
sparrow at three survey locations (1 at each), one willow flycatcher at one
location and one yellow-breasted chat at one location. I also checked for
barn owl at the site where it was located on the Christmas Bird Count last
December without success, although there were pellets and feathers.
Other more expected birds that I was happy to see in the all-too-short five
minute survey periods were scarlet tanager, orchard oriole, blue grosbeak and
eastern meadowlark.
Good Birding,
Kevin Krogh
