Hello,
Yesterday evening I went over to the woods by Lanier Middel School in Fairfax
City and was surprised to find an adult, probably female, Cooper's Hawk (much
to big for sharp-shinned and the tail seemed fairly rounded) feeding on an
unknown bird while perched on a branch about 15 feet off of the ground. As she
was only about 20 feet from my position I got a very good look at her for the
minute or so that she stayed around. Needless to say, with such a predator
around there was a dearth of other bird activity. There was however a Killdeer
running around on the soccer fields next to the woods.
Being new to birding can someone please tell me, how common are Cooper's Hawks
in the NoVA suburbs? Is there a reliable place to observe them in NoVA? This is
the first I have seen.
Thanks,
Jeff Clark
