Lake of the Woods, Orange County, VA, February 18 & 19. I got out early
Sunday and Monday morning, dawn in the 12 degree temps, to enjoy all of the
waterfowl. The lake was partially frozen, concentrating the birds in the
small open areas near the shore. The list below is a compilation of the
notable species of the weekend. Highlights include Redhead, Common
Goldeneye, 2 grebe, 3 mergansers, 17 species of waterfowl and lots of Fun!

American Wigeon 2
American Black Duck 5
Mallard 100
Canvasback 6
Redhead 9
Lesser Scaup 30
Bufflehead 15
Common Goldeneye 2 (male and female)
Hooded Merganser 10
Common Merganser 1 male
Red-breasted Merganser 2 males
Ruddy Duck 30
Pied-billed Grebe 20
Horned Grebe 4
Great Blue Heron 1 (flying due north: migrant?)
Bald Eagle 1 adult
Red-shouldered Hawk 2 a noisy pair.
American Coot 500! (at least, maybe 750!!)
Killdeer 1 (in the parking lot across the street)
Eastern Phoebe 1
Cedar Waxwing 12
Common Grackle 10,000 a flock of flocks!
Brown-headed Cowbird 30 one flock: more migrants?
