In the summary of our Kiptopeke Labor Day weekend I forgot to mention that
Liz and I visited "Lake Maddox" on the edge of Kiptopeke Sate Park on
August 30 but only saw a Pied-billed Grebe and 30 or so Canada Geese there.
I also neglected to call attention to Ned Brinkley's excellent op-ed piece
(which I don't think has been mentioned yet on VA-BIRD ... sorry if it has)
in the Sunday, August 31, 2003, "Virginian-Pilot" entitled "Tilting with
windmills on the Eastern Shore", pp. J1-2 (Commentary section) with
reference to possible wind farms offshore in the vicinity of Fisherman's
and Smith islands, where thousands of scoters and gannets are present
October through April. Even if these monstrosities didn't kill any birds
I'd still find them objectionable because they are so horrible just to look
