Howdy all,
Today started off very warm and extremely still. I think a gnat produces more
wind than what was at the station this morning. We sat and melted most of the
morning. Then about 10am it all changed. Cloud cover, cooler air, and about
15 mph winds. Felt great!
We didn't do to bad today considering the weather conditions. We topped out
with a total of 22 birds banded including our first VEERY and SUMMER TANAGER of
the season. Although there was not many migrants, flycatchers were again,
around in good numbers. We ended up banding a total of ten (LEAST and
TRAILL'S).
There were a few more birds around this morning than yesterday.
The rains finally set in mid afternoon here and it is still raining. Not sure
if it is going to last all night so I am wondering if banding tomorrow is
going to happen or not. It would be nice if it would clear up for about 4-5
hours
in the morning, just long enough to band a bit. We do need the rain and it is
nice to see a stead soaking rain right now.
I had an explosion of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS at my two feeders today. It
seriously was world war three in the front yard! The hummers didn't care if
you were standing there or not. It was almost dangerous! I am not very good at
guess-timating the number but 15-20 individuals sounds about right. They were
all trying to get in the last good drink before the rainy night ahead.
Totals for 8/30:
American Redstart 2
Black-&-white Warbler 1
Prairie Warbler 1
Northern Waterthrush 3
Red-eyed Vireo 1
White-eyed Vireo 1
Least Flycatcher 2 I don't ever remember catching 2 in a day
here.
Traill's Flycatcher 8
Veery 1
Summer Tanager 1
Northern Mockingbird 1
TOTAL-------------------------- 22
I am not really sure what the weather is going to do the next few days. Guess
I'll find out at 5am!
I hope everyone that needs rain gets it over the next few days.
And where is that Brown Booby!!???
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
