Howdy all,
Because we were short staffed today, we opted to go after sparrows than
yellow-rumps and it paid off. We could only run a few nets so we kept the brush
pile nets open and kept the lower beach nets closed. So when you look at the
numbers you will see that YELLOW-RUMPS didn't even break 100 today while the
sparrow numbers are way up! It was a nice day after a cold start.
The better birds of the day were THREE WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS of which one
was an adult bird! It was the first adult white-crowned I have seen banded
here.
Also nice was the capture of another LINCOLN'S SPARROW as well. Overall it
was a nice day at the banding station.
Here are the totals for 10/27:
Golden-crowned Kinglet 3
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Brown Creeper 3
Winter Wren 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler 97
Magnolia Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 2
Western Palm Warbler 1
Field Sparrow 5
White-crowned Sparrow 3 the high for a SEASON since 1995 is
only 2!
White-throated Sparrow 16
Swamp Sparrow 23
Song Sparrow 22
Lincoln's Sparrow 1 been a pretty good year on
them already
Slate-colored Junco 1
Eastern Towhee 3
American Goldfinch 3
Eastern Phoebe 5
Hermit Thrush 8
Gray Catbird 23 guess they decided to come
back
Brown Thrasher 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
TOTAL ----------------------------- 224
It looks as if the numbers are going to stay rather high for a little while
longer. Yellow-rumps are NOT in short supply here right now!
