Howdy!
On Thursday 6/19 I did a USGS Breeding Bird
Survey in eastern King and Queen County (Middle
Peninsula).  This area has nice swamps (Dragon,
Exol, Contra) but most of the area is farmland
and timber land. Because of the timber industry
there is a really nice mosaic of habitats, with
forest in various stages of regrowth.  Because of
the procedure of USGS surveys, this is not a
total count.  In this procedure a pre-established
route is followed with 3-minute stops every 1/2
mile for 50 stops.  The same route is run year
after year and the same procedure is used in all
BBS counts for easier comparison/analysis. One
always starts 1/2 hour before sunrise and
finishes within 5 hours of starting time.

For those of you who are interested, here are
this year's results. The first number is the
number of birds seen or heard. The second number
is the % of the sites that had this species.
Species of particular interest to me are in caps.
The most common species was red-eyed vireo, but
there were fun numbers of chats, prairie
warblers, and hooded warblers. It ia interesting
to me to see how many of the common suburban
backyard birds are not common in this area.
