HOWDY!
On Friday 2/21/03, from about 8:30 to 12:30 under
overcast skies and occasional drizzle I birded
several of the spots in the Walkerton CBC circle
in King William County between route 30 and the
Pamunkey River including "The Pocket" and a
private wildlife reserve nearby. Then from about
2:30-5:00 I birded parts of Westmoreland County
east of route 3 from Hague to Currioman Landing,
mostly in the rain.
Highlights were a Brewer's Blackbird, a Snow
Goose, large numbers (34)of hermit thrushes along
the roads, and large numbers of pintails(260). I
guess the hermit thrushes were at the road edges
because of the snow-covered ground in the woods.
The Brewer's Blackbird was a solitary breeding
plumage male with a flock of about 150 robins in
the soccer field in front of Acquinton Elementary
School along Route 30 at the intersection with
Walkerton Rd(King William). The immature Snow
Goose was near Drum Bay (Hague, Westmoreland
Co)along route 701 in a corn field among a flock
of 6 tundra swan and about 900-1000 Canada Geese.
Large numbers of robins, geese, and blackbirds
were in the fields where the slushy snow was
melted in patches. Flickers and towhees were also
present in good numbers. I saw no phoebes or
cedar waxwings and the numbers of most ducks were
down compared to earlier in season (especially
mallards and ring-necked). I spent very little
time in the woods, mostly birding from my car.
