Hello, birders.
Although the CBC that I wanted to participate in was
postponed yesterday I decided to go out and bird
somewhere anyway. I had been wanting to go to Julie
Metz for some time. I didn't see the Harris' Sparrow
but sparrow numbers and variety were good, despite the
rain. When the rain let up a bit, the sparrows were
much more cooperative, letting me view them instead of
staying hidden.
I walked through about 3 inches of slushy snow,
birding from the eastern part of pod 2 to much of pod
4. I was able to count 9 AM. TREE SPARROWS along the
southern edge of pod 3. They were giving their
musical little calls, clinging to the end of the weed
stalks while gleaning the seeds. White-throated and
Swamp Sparrows were abundant. There were some Song
Sparrows and 7 Field Sparrows, too. The only bird
that I successfully pished in was a Fox Sparrow, in
the NW corner of pod 3. A few Juncoes were present.
G.w. Teal, Mallards, Can. Geese and Am. Black Ducks
were in the marsh behind the trails. A female Harrier
cruised by a couple of times, once coming very close
to the blind where I was standing.
