Jerry Uhlman and I decided to check out Isabel damage and look for migrants
in the 42nd St. section of the Park, where we also ran into Mike Maupin. Storm
damage is considerable - one huge tree is down in the Upper Parking Lot - and
there will be much more open space come the Spring. Bird-wise, of note were a
Rose-breasted Grosbeak pair feeding with a large flock of Robins (the male
still in full breeding plumage), 3-4 Red-Eyed Vireos, a Yellowstart, 2 Common
Yellowthroats, and a Scarlet Tanager - along with the usual resident species
and
several Catbirds feeding on berries. Also of note was a Pied-billed Grebe
feeding in the creek off of the James River, the first either of us have seen
in
the Park. Santcuary from Isabel???
