I experienced the "Patagonia rest stop" effect today in my central
Blacksburg yard. I've been following the tribulations of a male
house wren who has been singing for a mate for at least a month. He
finally met someone and they seem to be ready to settle down
(doesn't it seem late for nesting?), which I've been watching from a
little-used window, when I saw 3, maybe four, first-year Orioles
foraging in a thicket of Rose-of-Sharon. It seemed that they were
eating the blossoms. I've not heard Orioles in the neighborhood this
spring or summer so I'm guessing they're moving through.
